Governance Structure

The management structure of Canadian Blood Services balances the need for ministerial responsibility and accountability, with the requirement that the organization has the necessary autonomy to ensure a safe, secure and effective blood supply service.

Canadian Blood Services was incorporated on February 9, 1998 pursuant to Part II of the Canada Corporations Act.

Under this structure, the Canadian Blood Services Board of Directors is comprised of 13 Directors, as follows:

  • 1 Chairperson

  • 4 Directors from members representing: British Columbia & Yukon, Prairies, Northwest Territories and Nunavut, Ontario, and Atlantic

  • 2 Directors from the general public representing consumers, donors, patients or other interests

  • 6 Directors providing medical, scientific, technical, business and public health expertise

The Canadian Blood Services Board of Directors invites individuals or groups to make presentations at any of its Board meetings. Please submit presentation requests to feedback@blood.ca and a member of our staff will contact you immediately.

Guidelines

Québec has established its own blood system, called Héma-Québec. Héma-Québec and Canadian Blood Services have a cooperative working relationship.
